How do I prepare my images for uploading?

It is important that images are clear; an ordinary digital camera [not a mobile phone] is usually good enough. Images must be in focus and you need to make sure there is no glare. It's usually best to use natural light [no flash] but to avoid strong sun.

When a image file is uploaded it is automatically resized to display clearly. However, due to limits on our bandwidth, you need to get your images down to an appropriate filesize before uploading - currently the maximum upload size accepted is 512KB.

Windows (XP)

The simplest way is by installing the 'Microsoft Image Resizer' software.
After installing you can do the following to prepare your pictures for uploading.

  1. Open the folder containing your pictures
  2. Select one or more pictures and right click
  3. Click 'Resize Pictures' on the menu
  4. Select 'Large (fits a 1024 x 768 screen)' and click OK

Your original pictures will not be modified but instead new images will be created with '(Large)' appended to the end of the filename that are suitable for uploading to TheBigSaltashPictureShow.

Windows Vista/Win7

Unfortunately the Microsoft tool only works on XP, however someone has created a tool with exactly the same functionality that works on Vista and Windows 7. You can download it from http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/. After installing you should be able to follow the instructions as above for Windows XP.

Note: This tool is provided by a third party developer and as such TheBigSaltashPictureShow cannot provide any guarantee or support - you should run the usual checks such as virus scanning before installing any application you are unsure of.

Mac OSX

Hopefully someone with a Mac can let us know the best method but the iResize utility looks like it will do the job quite nicely.
Setting the 'Proportional Resizing' value to 640 should give you perfect images for uploading.
